How To Delete Photos From Google Photos

If you have photos stored in Google Photos, there may come a time when you want to delete some of them (or maybe even all of them). So in this article, I’m going to walk you through everything you need to know about deleting photos from Google Photos.

If you simply have a few photos that you don’t really like or don’t want to keep anymore. You can very easily delete them from either the Google Photos app or the Google photos website, and they will be automatically removed from your Google Account and all your synced devices.

But, if your phone is running low on storage space and you want to delete all your photos from your phone but still keep them on Google Photos, there is actually a built in feature that lets you do that quite easily. So click here if you want to learn how to do that.

How To Delete Photos In The App

If you want to delete a photo (or a few photos) from the Google Photos app on a phone or tablet, the first thing you have to do is open the app and scroll down until you find the photo(s) you want to delete.

Then hold your finger down on one of them for about half a second until it becomes ticked like this:

And now, if you want to delete multiple photos at once, you can select all the other photos you want to delete by just tapping on each one.

And then, once you’ve selected all the photos you want to delete, you’ll just need to tap on the trash can icon in the top right hand corner of the screen.

And a message will then pop up from the bottom of the screen asking if you want to remove these photos from your Google account and all your synced devices.

This means it will delete the photos from Google Photos, as well as deleting them from your phone (if the photos are on your phone), and deleting them from any other phone or tablet of yours that has the Google Photos app installed.

But as long as you want to delete these photos from everywhere, go ahead and tap “Move to trash”.

Then, a message will pop up saying the photos have been moved to trash, which means they’re now deleted.

But, it’s worth keeping in mind that after you do this, the photos will remain in the trash folder in Google photos for the next 60 days before they are permanently deleted.

This is fine if you’re just deleting the photos because you don’t really want them anymore, because they will eventually be completely deleted and it gives you a chance to potentially get them back if you change your mind.

But, if you want to completely delete the photos immediately, you’ll need to follow these next few steps.

After you’ve moved the photos to trash, you’ll need to tap “Library” in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

And then, tap “Trash” near the top right corner of the screen.

Now, you will see all the photos that are in your trash. And if you want to permanently delete them, you’ll just need to select one by holding down on it until it’s selected…

And then, select all the other images you want to permanently delete by just tapping on each of them.

Then, tap “Delete” in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

And then a message will pop up from the bottom of the screen asking you if you’re sure you want to permanently delete these photos. But as long as you’re 100% sure, go ahead and tap “Delete permanently”.

Now, the photos will be removed from the trash and permanently deleted.

You don’t have to do these extra steps if you’re happy for the photos to sit in the trash for 60 days, but if you want them gone immediately, this is how you can do it.

How To Delete Photos On The Website

If you want to delete a photo using the Google photos website on a computer, the first thing you have to do is go to photos.google.com and sign in with your Google account if you’re not already signed in.

And then, scroll down until you find the photo(s) you want to delete, and hover over one of them so that a little grey checkmark appears in the top left corner of the photo.

And now click on that checkmark to select the photo.

Now, if you want to delete multiple images, you can select all the others by just clicking on each image.

Then, once you’ve selected all the images you want to delete, all you need to do is click the trash can icon in the top right hand corner of the screen.

And then, it will ask you if you want to remove the images from your Google account, synced devices, and places shared within Google Photos.

What this basically means is that the photos will be deleted from Google photos, as well as being deleted from your phone (if the photos are on your phone and the Google Photos app is installed).

So as long as that’s all okay with you, you’ll just need to click “Move to trash”.

And now, the photos you selected will disappear, and you’ll see a popup in the bottom left hand corner of the screen letting you know they’ve been moved to trash.

So now those photos are pretty much deleted, but it’s worth keeping in mind that after you do this they will go into the trash folder in Google Photos and wait there for 60 days before they’re permanently deleted.

This is fine if you’re just deleting a few photos because you don’t really want them anymore, because they will eventually be deleted, and this way you will have the option to get them back if you change your mind within 60 days which is nice.

But if you want them to be completely deleted immediately, you’ll have to do these next few steps to manually remove them from the trash.

So after you’ve moved the photos into trash, you’ll need to click on “Trash” in the menu on the left hand side of the screen (you might have to scroll down a bit if your screen is really small).

And now you’ll see all the photos that are currently in trash, and if you’re happy to permanently delete everything that’s currently in trash, you can just click “Empty trash” in the top right hand corner of the screen.

And then you’ll see a warning message warning you that if you do this everything in trash will be permanently deleted and it can’t be undone, but as long as you’re sure you want to do this, just go ahead and click “Empty Trash” and everything in there will be permanently deleted.

But, if you only want to delete some of the images that are in trash, you can select the few you want to delete, and then permanently delete only the selected photos.

To do this, hover over one of the images and click the grey checkmark just like before.

And then, select any other photos you want to permanently delete by clicking on them.

And then, click “Delete permanently” in the top right hand corner.

Now, it will come up with a warning message asking if you’re sure you want to permanently delete the selected photos, and as long as you’re sure, just go ahead and click “Delete” and they will be permanently deleted.

As I said before, you don’t have to do these few steps if you’re just deleting a few photos that you don’t really want, because they will eventually be deleted. But if you want them permanently deleted immediately, this is how you can do it.

How To Delete Photos From Your Phone But Keep Them On Google Photos

If your phone is running low on storage and you want to remove all your photos from your phone, but still have them safely backed up in Google photos where you will still be able to access them whenever you want, there is actually quite an easy way to do that in the Google Photos app.
